Toronto, ON – March 5, 2026 — The President of the Canada Arab Congress on Middle East and North Africa Relations (CACMR), Abdullatif Al-Shaikh, attended the high-level policy discussion “Strategy, Resilience and Growth: Canada–EU Trade Next Steps under CETA,” hosted by The Empire Club of Canada in Toronto.

The event brought together senior government officials, business leaders, and policy experts to discuss the evolving strategic partnership between Canada and the European Union under the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA). Featured speakers included Maroš Šefčovič, European Commissioner for Trade, and The Honourable Maninder Sidhu, Canada’s Minister of International Trade, who delivered keynote remarks on strengthening transatlantic economic cooperation in a rapidly changing geopolitical environment.

During the evening, Al-Shaikh also had the opportunity to briefly speak with both Commissioner Šefčovič and Minister Sidhu following the program, exchanging views on international trade cooperation and the importance of strengthening economic partnerships between Canada and its global allies.

The discussion explored how Canada and the European Union can deepen collaboration to secure critical supply chains, enhance economic resilience, align climate and trade policies, and maintain open markets while protecting workers and industries on both sides of the Atlantic. A joint fireside chat between the two leaders was moderated by renowned entrepreneur and venture capitalist Arlene Dickinson, General Managing Partner at District Venture Capital and well known from CBC’s Dragon’s Den.

With two-way Canada–EU trade now exceeding €123 billion (approximately $162 billion CAD) annually—representing more than a 70 percent increase since the provisional application of CETA—the event highlighted the growing importance of the European Union in Canada’s global trade diversification strategy.

Al-Shaikh noted that continued dialogue between policymakers, international partners, and the business community is essential for strengthening resilient and forward-looking trade relationships.

As President of CACMR, Al-Shaikh continues to engage with international leaders and institutions to promote dialogue, trade, and investment opportunities between Canada and key global regions, including Europe and the Middle East and North Africa.
