Latest Update on Arab Heritage Month By Honorable Senator Mohammad Al Zaibak
The Honourable Senator Mohammad Al Zaibak recently delivered his second reading speech on Bill S-227, An Act Respecting Arab Heritage Month, which proposes to formally designate April as Arab Heritage Month in Canada.
In his address, Senator Al Zaibak highlighted the historic and ongoing contributions of Arab Canadians to Canada’s social, cultural, economic, and civic life for more than 140 years. He noted that the Bill builds upon the Honourable David McGuinty’s earlier Bill C-232, which was adopted by the House of Commons during the 44th Parliament but did not complete the Senate process before Parliament was dissolved.
“Arab Heritage Month will provide an opportunity for all Canadians to honour the contributions of Arab Canadians and to recommit ourselves to building a society where every culture is celebrated and everyone has the chance to thrive,” said Senator Al Zaibak. “It is more than a celebration — it is a testament to the values that define Canada: inclusion, diversity, fairness, and unity.”
The Senator also recognized both early pioneers and contemporary leaders in the Arab Canadian community, emphasizing their diverse contributions across the country. He underscored that Bill S-227 represents not only a symbolic gesture of recognition but also a meaningful step toward fostering a more inclusive and unified Canada.
Senator Al Zaibak continues to engage stakeholders and Senate colleagues to encourage broad, cross-party support for the timely passage of Bill S-227.
